The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
