In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
